ABSTRACT

Schools have an important role in meeting young people’s career learning and development (CLD) needs through the curriculum. This chapter discusses different curriculum structures where career learning can be facilitated, and outlines an effective model of curriculum planning for developing a school’s careers education provision. It argues that a narrow instrumental approach to CLD is not sufficient to prepare young people for twenty-firstcentury lives and that more powerful cognitive and affective approaches are needed. The chapter concludes by raising key issues for curriculum leaders seeking to improve CLD in their schools.
