ABSTRACT

The complexities of the China-India relationships are the background to the formation of the China-India-Pakistan strategic triangle. Subjective and objective elements shaped these relationships. The objective elements were formed by a history of British India-China trade that included the infamous opium trade. Karl Marx is a reliable recorder of scale and importance of this relationship, its effect on the fortunes of the East India Company, and the policy of the British India government and London.1
