ABSTRACT
The university has both substantive form and ideational form. It is both an institution in society and it reflects and embodies and, indeed, sometimes challenges ideas of the university. Ideas of the university do not exhaust our understanding of the university; far from it. But the university cannot be understood independently of the ideas it embodies.
