ABSTRACT

We are aware that the natural environment faces tangible threats, such as deforestation, coastal erosion, sea level rise, topsoil erosion, air and water pollution, destruction of biodiversity with the extinction of animal and plant species and depletion of fossil fuels. This destruction ostensibly appears to be driven by narrow economic considerations and callous vested interests. Fortunately, there is growing awareness of the link between indiscriminate frenetic development and the adverse impact of climate change, resulting in frequent large-scale natural disasters. Disaster mitigation and sustainable development are hence inextricably linked.1
