Yes-no questions Yes-no questions are formulated in the same way as statements, the only difference being the question intonation in speech and the question mark in writing. There is no subjectverb inversion as happens in English and some other languages:

Ele é italiano. He’s Italian. (statement)

Ele é italiano? Is he Italian? (question)

When replying to yes-no questions, the main verb of the question is repeated in the appropriate person and negated with não if necessary:

Você fala português? – Falo. Do you speak Portuguese? – Yes.
