Like English, Portuguese has a present simple tense, e.g. eu estudo ‘I study’ and a present continuous tense, e.g. eu estou estudando ‘I am studying’. When talking about actions in the present,84 the use of the two tenses is largely the same in the two languages, apart from a few small differences mentioned below.
