ABSTRACT
RELATIONS between the Netherlands Indies and Japan presented no special difficulties until after the world crisis of 1929. In 1899 a law had accorded the Japanese the status of “Europeans” in the Indies; in 1912 a general trade treaty had put their activities in that country with regard to trade, business, shipping, and immigration on the normal footing of a most-favoured nation clause.
