ABSTRACT
Some historical awareness is required for us to understand our own worldview and put it into perspective. First let us look at the position that mothers and children have held throughout the centuries; it will then be shown that the norm has shifted from a relative neglect of children in large paternalistic families to an often exclusive bond with the mother figure.
