A word is in order about the special role played by Swift in this book. . . . The reasons for this are not only that Swift cannot easily be assimilated to current ideas about “writers,” “the text,” or “the heroic author,” but that his work is at once occasional, powerful, and-from the point of view of systematic textual practice-incoherent.
