ABSTRACT

In the international development of the media market Russia presents a unique case in many ways. Russian development has followed many of the international trends, but many of these trends have assumed more radical forms. Whereas in other countries the process of change has been more gradual, in Russia the collapse of the former system has meant re-building much of the media structure from the ground up. Yet the Russian development differs from situations in Eastern and Central Europe, because the change in the media system has not been as complete as it was in many of those countries. In Russia, the media market has greatly changed the former socialist media system, and the increasing number of media outlets is restructuring the audiences.
