ABSTRACT

Picture books can also form a simple introduction to Drama skills by being used as the basis for tableaux. Children can take a favourite picture book with them into a Drama session and, individually or in groups, recreate pages from them. These can then be photographed and displayed with the text underneath them to make a version of the picture book featuring the children. This serves as a good introduction to Drama work because the children become accustomed to using their bodies and faces imaginatively but are provided with a stimulus so that they do not have to invent a narrative immediately. After recreating picture books, the work can be developed by asking children to extend the story by devising a short sequel to the picture book and improvising an original piece of storytelling.
