ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a framework for facilitating the shift from problem identification and solution finding to realizing a sustainable improvement. The discussion will illustrate how typical problem-solving methods mesh with a three-phased model for change and its nine implementing action steps. The following topics are discussed:

■ Lewin’s Three-Phase Model ■ Applying the Three Phases ■ Using Teams to Implement and Sustain Improvement

Whenever there are improvements or changes to established operations, no matter how minor, those working in the system have invested time and energy in existing practices. These system stakeholders are accustomed to how things currently work and will find proposed revisions unsettling. Consequently, shifting system structures, routine activities, and cultural behaviors can become threatening when people are left to their own coping devices.
