ABSTRACT

Alsop’s inclusive architectural design approach, allowing others to shape outcomes, is also found in his painting activities. One such communal endeavour occurred when he worked together with a group of Royal Academy fine art students to create a huge painting ‘before lunch’. Another was his curatorial occupation of ‘Chelsea Space’ near Tate Britain – a gallery space dedicated to experimental dialogue between art, design and culture. Over five weeks Alsop and his studio team created a satellite space entitled ‘Towards...’ – a continuous developing ‘walk-in’ installation that provided a changing setting for a series of events and discussions in which visiting audiences were encouraged to contribute ideas 04.2 – 04.3.
