ABSTRACT

Coordinated team performance in complex settings often relies heavily on effective information technology use and sharing of knowledge between team members. In a variety of healthcare and spaceflight tasks, there exist challenges in supporting and managing coordination across domains of expertise and complementary task demands. One aspect of these challenges is the ability of teams to perform adaptively and effectively in response to situational events that may threaten mission success and even human survival. Complex, time-critical environments are characterized by emerging and dynamic events that require active monitoring of, interaction with, and response to changing conditions and success criteria. However, different aspects of events have distinct timescales and demands for human response and team coordination.
