ABSTRACT

There are limitations to any model or approach to supervision/training. When a supervisor assumes a nonexpert stance in a supervision relationship, she2 knows that her knowledge and experience are still valuable assets. She simply begins with a similar mind-set each time she meets with a therapist3 and each time she thinks about the relationship. This mind-set includes asking questions such as:

How can I tread as softly as possible?t What are my obligations and areas of influence?t How do I meet my obligations (to the therapist, client, agency, t licensure board, etc.) while keeping my nonexpert stance? How can I create freedom for the therapist while retaining the t option of closing off therapist options when it is necessary to do so?
