ABSTRACT

Whenever ‘the media’ are discussed as an important feature of contemporary society, a whole range of assumptions come into play. As we might expect from Chapter 6, different ideologies suggest different ways in which media organisations might function socially/politically and how we might understand their activities and the ways in which we interact with them. In this chapter we want to investigate questions such as:

• Should society expect media organisations to perform certain actions and desist from others?
