ABSTRACT

As has been the case elsewhere in the world, several countries in Africa have in recent years embarked on the daunting journey of rape law reform. At the same time, a number of important developments have unfolded in the African regional human rights system, most notably the adoption of the Protocol to the Africa Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (the African Women’s Protocol) and the introduction of two genderrelated Protocols in the Great Lakes and Southern African sub-regions.
