ABSTRACT

Meeting standards and mandates has become the primary focus for most teachers. Administrators, too, continually push teachers to have their students meet higher and higher expectations. Legislators and policy makers tie funding to performance on standardized tests that are, in most instances, aligned with the standards and mandates. While no one argues that there should be accountability, many teachers are beginning to question the teaching methods being used to try and meet these standards and mandates. They ask, “Is it possible to meet standards and mandates while teaching in a manner that is appropriate and engaging for young children?” In this chapter, one teacher, Angela Carr, addresses how she meets standards and mandates through the use of Shared Journal. She explains how Shared Journal addresses the standards within and across multiple content areas, rather than focusing on one content area.
