ABSTRACT

E xpressions such as some, many, and few have an obvious function todenote quantities of things. Furthermore, given that people sometimesprefer to use these natural language quantifiers (NLQ) rather than numerical equivalents (Wallsten, Budescu, Zwick, & Kemp, 1993), there are both practical and theoretical reasons for exploring the relationship between verbal and numerical descriptions of quantity. For this reason a great deal of psychological and psycholinguistic research has focused on the mapping between NLQs and numbers.
