ABSTRACT

The voice has a huge impact on others when we communicate verbally. We can make a phrase such as ‘I am really enthusiastic about this project’ sound genuine, confident, sarcastic, uncertain or plain unenthusiastic! Think of the voice like a musical instrument with a wide range of notes, yet many people just play the ‘middle C’ and if the middle C for your client is bored, uncertain or bullying, they are unlikely to make a positive impact on others, no matter how hard they work. The strange thing about the voice is that most of us would prefer to bury our head in the sand and do anything to avoid hearing our voice recorded to assess how it sounds! You do not have to be a fully trained voice coach to use this exercise, though it is a good idea to try it out yourself before working with a client.
