ABSTRACT

Lord Augustus Fitzroy, with four sail, was sent by the admiral in chace of four strange sail, who refusing to bring-to, Lord A. Fitzroy fired into them, and an engagement began which lasted the greatest part of the night. At daylight the strangers hoisted French colours, and proved to be part of the Marquis d'An tin's squadron. As war was not yet declared between France and England, the English and French commanders mutually excused themselves for the mistake which had happened, and parted as friends, with a considerable loss of men on both sides.
