ABSTRACT

The following chapter describes a critical media inquiry project with high school students in Chicago. Borrowing from Duncan-Andrade and Yang’s work with high school youth in Oakland, California, our Chicago interpretation of their “Doc Ur Bloc” (DYB) urban sociology class is a tangible example of translating broad constructs into concrete collaborative projects with youth. Given the context of the institution where we teach, we thought the Oakland DYB project enabled us to engage in a collective process to engage the real-life conditions of young people in their communities. As process, more than a conclusive exercise, the intent of our course was to initiate a broader dialogue with young people around how their communities are viewed in the larger world.
