ABSTRACT

The meeting took place in the Government Architect’s office, an impressive double volume atelier space with single-height stacked glass wall rooms around the perimeter. The building is that of the Government Building Agency (VROM) but the Government Architect’s identity is kept separate by its own entry around the corner from the VROM entry. The GA considered it important in his work with other government departments that he maintain an identity separate from that of VROM. The double volume is glazed to the street, allowing for their operations to be very visible. We met in a large library/meeting room. The wall of architecture books allowed ready reference to the work of individual architects and the demonstration of architectural approaches when discussing selection of architects with a client group. Two separate presentation rooms allow parallel presentations to occur when selecting architects for jobs, or allow one team to be preparing while the other is presenting to a jury. The interior is crisp and well-designed, colourful, and well furnished with storage and numerous large tables, some of which house numbers of people working at terminals.
