ABSTRACT

Today’s theatre audiences are not only able to compare one theatre with another but also able to compare the modern theatregoing experience with a wider range of contemporary leisure activities. Theatres need to compete with these in terms of comfort and service as well as artistic, educational and entertainment programming. The front of house (FOH) design can make a positive contribution to the enjoyment of a visit to the theatre. The foyers are not there purely to process an audience from the collection of their tickets, via the toilets, to their seats, while selling them refreshments on the way. They provide an opportunity to animate both the building and street-scene: they are the showcase for the organisation – a place to see and be seen.
