ABSTRACT

Bivariate analysis includes a large number of different methods. This chapter concentrates on the main approaches to bivariate analysis of nominal and ordinal variables. This chapter:

• focuses on variables with relatively few categories; • explores tabular, graphical and statistical tech-

niques; • distinguishes between techniques designed for

descriptive analysis and those used for inferential purposes;

• aims to provide an overview of the range of methods of bivariate analysis and a framework for selecting the most appropriate method;

• leaves the analysis of interval-level variables to the next chapter.
