DEVS-Based Modeling and Simulation Framework for Emergence in System of Systems
We consider the ability of Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) to provide the concepts and formalisms needed for modeling and simulation of emergent behavior in complex systems. We show that DEVS provides systems components and coupling for models of systems of systems capable of exhibiting emergent behavior. Further, DEVS coupling supports dynamic structure for realistic modeling of adaptation and evolution. Also, experimental frame concept support observation of emergent behavior, and DEVS Markov models support prediction of emergence derived from such observation. Finally, we provide some fundamental conditions that may be necessary in order to engineer positive emergence and two distinct examples where the application of the concepts and tools discussed.
