ABSTRACT

There is an entertaining class of problems that involves a balance scale (Figure 3.1) and a collection of 9 pearls. The premise is that all the pearls but one weigh the same. The odd pearl is either heavier or lighter than the others, but we do not know which. Your job is, in 3 weighings, to find the odd pearl.
