ABSTRACT

This chapter brings together the first six chapters by covering the current issues the U.S. faces in terms of immigration, crime control, counterterrorism, and foreign policies, building on the premise that these are interconnected systems that reinforce American’s insecurity. Focus will be given to American identity and major issues that need addressing to ensure long-term security that is sustainable and just. U.S. counterterrorism strategies, as well as immigration policies, have done little to resolve the two most pressing problems – terrorism and immigration – facing the country. After 18 years of the global war on terrorism, many people believe it should have ended but it has not. Despite implementing aggressive immigration policies, including authorizing local police officers to act as immigration agents, the flow of undocumented aliens has not stopped and our communities have never been safer. The answers to these questions are simple – our policies and approaches are not working. This chapter calls for a renewed focus on our fight against terrorism and immigration, and offers suggestions for addressing these problems.
