ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on exploring a two-fold question regarding Mezirow and Greene’s work: how Mesirow’s Transformation Theory is related to, and influenced and enriched by, Greene’s work, and, conversely, how Mezirow’s ideas enrich and extend the pedagogical ideas of Greene. Based on this question, the first section presents the basic biographical routes and the theoretical background of the two thinkers. Then, the second section focuses on fundamental concepts about the learning process, as these have been perceived by Greene and Mezirow, such as the understanding of experience, imagination, critical reflection, and reflective dialogue. Finally, the ideas of the two theorists regarding the emancipatory potential of art are discussed – an issue that was not given the attention it deserves within the transformative learning literature.
