ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by drawing some conclusions regarding the impact of European integration upon multinational-owned manufacturing industry in Wales. It then moves on to consider three more general themes in a little more detail. First, this chapter returns to the question of whether ownership and vintage are useful to an understanding of the character and response of multinationals to processes of European integration. Second, it develops one issue to emerge from the empirical material presented in Chapter 7; namely, the connection between economic integration at the intra-national, European and world scales. Finally, this chapter considers the very topical and important policy issue of the possibilities for encouraging multinational embeddedness and competitiveness in the peripheral region context.
