ABSTRACT
South Africa seemingly breaks the mould of the poorly performing big state. Moreover, the country's democratic transition has removed not only the last colonial issue from Africa, enabling, inter alia, the transition from the OAU to the AU, but it has allowed the region to shift the focus away from apartheid and towards its own recovery and development.
