ABSTRACT

East Franconian dialects are spoken in southern central and south-eastern Germany in the following regions (see Map 34):

along the River Main from west of Würzburg up to the source, i.e. in much of Lower Franconia (Unterfranken) and Upper Franconia (Oberfranken);

around Meiningen to the north of the border between East and West Germany, and in communities in the GDR directly north of the border around Hirschberg (north of Hof);

in the western part of central Franconia (Mittelfranken) around Gunzenhausen and Ansbach;

in the northern parts of Baden-Württemberg around Crailsheim, Schwäbish-Hall and Heilbronn.
