ABSTRACT
Divided into numerous independent states until the nineteenth Century, Italy unified itself into a single political entity in 1861 and since 1946 has been a democratic republic. In 1991, its popula tion was 57.5 million living in a territory of some 301,200 square kilometres (116,300 square miles).
