ABSTRACT

The result was a taxonomy that begins with the world (International studies of theatre and drama), moves on to studies of theatre by geographical regions and then on to the expanded 160 national bibliographies. From there the taxonomy widens (or perhaps narrows if you prefer) into categories of continuing interest to this project – puppetry, theatre for young audiences, music and dance theatre, cultural policy

It was a hard but practical decision to only include books, with a few exceptions, in this bibliography and not journal, magazine or newspaper materials. But even dealing with books alone, space limits were reached quickly and we were again faced with crucial choices. More often than not, we turned back to the notion of ‘usefulness’ as final arbiter. So a book in Korean about avant-garde British theatre might be dropped in this English-language edition in favour of a book about avant-garde British theatre written by a British writer.
