ABSTRACT

In this chapter Tony Booth attempts to clarify and provide a response to some of the issues raised by Mårten Söder in the previous chapter. He examines ideas about labelling and argues that Mårten Söder misrepresents labelling theory and is mistaken in viewing all proponents of integration as non-labellers who deny the significance of the experience of disability. He analyses the assumptions underlying Söder’s chapter and suggests that they involve a false view of science which systematically distorts Söder’s judgement and obscures his commitment. The chapter is both a critique and a positive contribution to a discussion of integration, disability and commitment.
