ABSTRACT

Mairian Corker, who at the time of writing this chapter was the Education Officer for the National Deaf Children’s Society, starts by outlining a set of principles on which to base the activities of voluntary organisations of and for deaf children, young people and adults. She then provides a detailed case study of the educational work of the National Deaf Children’s Society. She goes on to examine some of the conflicts of interest which may impede voluntary societies in living up to their principles.

The truth is: we do need you, not to be ‘experts’ or managers of our lives, but to be friends, enablers and receivers of our ‘gifts’ to you.
