ABSTRACT
Surrendering unconditionally to the United States in August 1945, Japan lost its colonial holdings, and its land area was reduced to the size it had been 80 years earlier, when the country was opened to the West. Many characteristics of the Japanese past were eradicated, and the country confronted the need for a major transformation.
