ABSTRACT

One cannot with fidelity merely speak of Grotowski; one must speak with him. I have chosen to write a meditation rather than a report. Grotowski is in process, and his words, like his exercises, flow. Hence, to be faithful to him is not to imitate him but to transform him. His words are performative utterances – not things, but actions. Either we let an action die or we respond to it without repeating it; we “tell it forward,” in other words.
