ABSTRACT

Wyspianski’s drama has been modified in parts to adjust to the purpose of the director. The few interpolations and changes in the original text do not, however, detract from the style of the poet. The balance of the text has been somewhat altered by the deliberately obsessive repetition of certain phrases such as “our Akropolis" or “the cemetery of the tribes.” This liberty is justified because these phrases are the motifs around which the play revolves. The prologue is an excerpt from one of Wyspianski’s letters, referring to the “Akropolis” as the symbol of the highest point of any specific civilization.
