ABSTRACT

An unexpected reader of Herbert’s poetry at the outset of the 1840s was George Eliot. Her solitary comment on the poet occurs in a letter to Maria Lewis dated 1 October 1841. As a response to Herbert, it is distinctly and meaningfully personal.
