Professor of English Literature at the University of Dublin, Edward Dowden included in his widely read ‘Puritan and Anglican’ a brief but refreshing interpretation of Herbert’s life and poetry. The terms of reference commonly deployed to this time are seen to recede still further as Dowden searches ‘below the surface’. See also above, p. 30.
