Steele and Addison, The 'Plebeian' and the 'Old Whig', 1719
The bill was introduced to the Lords on 14 March and the Whigs, already divided, split on the issue. Addison supported the bill and the ministerial Whigs who introduced it. Steele, now a follower of Walpole and other dissident Whigs, argued against the measure as both MP and pamphleteer. The two former friends fought each other in the 'Plebeian' and the 'Old Whig', Addison being so ill that he could not continue his journal beyond the second number.
