These two issues of the 'Examiner' represent typical Tory attacks on what was becoming more visibly a Whig journal. The number for 24-31 August 1710 ridicules Steele's slanted news reporting, the material that issues from 'St. James's Coffee House'. The number for 5-12 October engages in ad hominem criticism of Steele and belittles him as an ineffectual but pretentious party hack.
