Steele on 'The Drummer', 1716, 1722
Steele's Preface to 'The Drummer' (1716) is followed by an excerpt (pp. xiv-xvi) from his Dedication to William Congreve in the 1722 edition of the play. Steele arranged for the second edition, in part to capitalize on its successful revival (see No. 53) and in part to retaliate against Tickell, who omitted it from the first collected edition of 'Addison's Works'. Tickell later included 'The Drummer' in a smaller trade edition of 'Addison's Miscellaneous Works' (3 vols, 1726).
