Hugh Blair, 'Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres' [1760], 1783

Hugh Blair (1718-1800) was a Scottish divine and active in Edinburgh's literary circle, which included David Hume, Adam Ferguson, Adam Smith, Henry Home Lord Kames, and others. On 11 December 1759 he began to read lectures on criticism in the University of Edinburgh. In August 1760 he was made professor of rhetoric there, and on 7 April 1762 Regius Professor of rhetoric and belles-lettres.
