Bradbrook,Jane Austen and Her Predecessors, Cambridge, England, 1966, p. 9, has commented on this inclusion of The Vicar in a list of 'Books for Young Ladies': '[Lady Pennington] considers that very few novels and romances are worth the trouble of reading, but when Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield appeared she made an exception to that in the later editions of her popular advice.'
