Thomas Barnard, Dean of Derry, on Goldsmith's rivalry with Garrick, in The New Foundling Hospital for Wit, 1786

Goldsmith's poem Retaliation, published on 19 April 1774, two weeks after his death, established a vogue of ironic burlesque and lapidary verse. Richard Cumberland and David Garrick (see No. 51) also wrote replies. Thomas Barnard (r728-r8o6) is not known to have been a close friend of Goldsmith's but both were members of Dr Johnson's Literary Club.
