Left Review (1934–8) was edited by Edgell Rickword, a Communist Party member and distinguished literary critic, and stressed the role of literature and the arts in the political struggle. For Lewis, see No. 75. His article was an example of the contemporary fashion for involving Hopkins, as well as living poets, in the social and political arguments of the day.
