E.W. Mellown, in ‘The Reception of Hopkins’s Poems, 1919–1930’, suggested, on the basis of information from the Herald, that the author was Robert Bain, ‘senior English master for many years at Morrison’s Academy, Crieff (Modern Philology, August 1965, p. 39n).
