The Irish Monthly was a magazine of religious and general interest, founded 1873 and edited until 1912 by Fr. Matthew Russell, SJ, who was well known for his encouragement of younger writers. He had printed two Latin translations of Shakespeare songs by Hopkins in 1886–7 (see Letters to Bridges, p. 230), as well as ‘Rosa Mystica’ in 1898.
